Which Shade of Red to Wear
Shades that work for Day 6
Shades to avoid
Any shade of true red works for Day 6 — scarlet, deep red, crimson, or rani red. Avoid pink-reds and coral (not bold enough) and very dark maroon (reads as brown). The most impactful choices are scarlet and crimson.
Red Outfit Ideas for Garba Night
Red is the most energetic color of the nine Navratri nights and the easiest to style. Almost every red garment works — it is the most universally flattering of all nine colors.
Red Bandhani Chaniya Choli
A deep red bandhani chaniya choli in georgette — the red bandhani is a cornerstone of Gujarati festival dress. The tied dot pattern in red on a slightly deeper red base, or red with white bandhani dots, is the most traditional Day 6 garba look. Heavy silver jhumkas.
Scarlet Mirror Work Chaniya
A scarlet or rani red chaniya choli with full mirror work embroidery. Red and mirror work together on the garba ground under lights is the most photographed look of Navratri. This is the outfit for Day 6.
Red Silk Saree
A red Kanjeevaram, Banarasi, or Paithani silk saree. Unlike at weddings (where guests avoid red), red sarees are actively appropriate at Navratri. A red Kanjeevaram silk saree with gold border for the evening puja is a classic.
Red Salwar Suit
A deep red cotton or silk kurta with churidar or slim palazzos. Simple and festive — add a bandhani or block-print dupatta. Red is the most energetic and auspicious color of the nine days and is fully appropriate even in a work setting for Navratri.
Red for Different Skin Tones
Red is universally flattering on Indian skin tones — arguably the most flattering color of all nine Navratri days.
- Fair skin: Deep reds and scarlet create a striking contrast against fair skin. Avoid very pale pinks or coral that can wash out a lighter complexion. Go deep.
- Wheatish skin: Deep red and crimson are highly flattering. The warm-cool contrast of red against the warm undertones of wheatish skin is one of the strongest combinations in Indian occasion dressing.
- Dusky skin: Red is universally flattering across all Indian skin tones. Deep scarlet and rani red look particularly powerful against deeper complexions. This is arguably the most flattering color of all nine Navratri days.
- Very deep skin: Bright scarlet and crimson are stunning. Red on very deep skin has almost no downside — every shade works.
Jewellery for Day 6
- Oxidised silver: The most traditional pairing for red garba outfits. Heavy silver jhumkas, a layered oxidised necklace with red stone or coral detailing.
- Gold: Red and gold is a festive and auspicious combination — this is the traditional bridal pairing, and it works just as beautifully for Day 6.
- Bangles: Red glass bangles are traditional and meaningful. Gold bangles or gold-and-red lac bangles. This is the day to wear a full set of red bangles.
- Avoid: White or very pale jewellery looks disconnected from a red garba outfit. Go warm — silver, gold, or oxidised metal with warm stone colours.
What Maa Katyayani and Red Signify
Maa Katyayani is the sixth and most fierce form of Goddess Durga. She is believed to have appeared to destroy the demon Mahishasura. She rides a lion and has four arms. She is worshipped by unmarried women who pray for a good husband, and by anyone seeking the removal of obstacles and the fulfilment of wishes. Red is her color because it represents power, passion, and the force of transformation. Unlike at weddings where red is reserved for brides, at Navratri red is for everyone — it is the color of Shakti.
